How to get an EIN without an SSN (non-resident founders)

Yes, you can get an EIN without a Social Security Number. Here's the actual process.

Almost every non-resident founder hits the same wall: the online EIN application requires an SSN or ITIN. The IRS, helpfully, does not advertise loudly that there's another way.

The non-resident path

Non-resident owners apply by faxing or mailing Form SS-4 to the appropriate IRS service center. The form is the same — you just submit it differently. Processing takes 2–6 weeks once the IRS receives it.

What you need

  • Your LLC's legal name and state of formation
  • Your name and country (no SSN required — write 'Foreign' in that field)
  • A responsible party (usually you)
  • A reason for applying (typically 'started new business')
